A spectral hound that haunts and foretells death
The Barghest prowls through English folklore as a monstrous black hound said to haunt lonely roads, graveyards, and ancient ruins. Its glowing eyes and enormous shadowy form were considered omens of death, disaster, or approaching tragedy. Travelers claimed to hear heavy footsteps and low growls following them through the fog before the creature finally emerged from the darkness. In northern England, tales of the Barghest endured for centuries as one of the most feared supernatural beasts of the countryside.
