Basilisk

A venomous gaze turns flesh to stone in an instant

Origin Medieval European Bestiary
Creature Type Reptile
Ability Death Gaze
Lore

The Basilisk was feared throughout medieval Europe as the king of serpents, a creature whose very gaze could kill instantly. Often depicted as a monstrous reptile crowned with features of a rooster, the Basilisk was said to poison the land around it with every breath. Rivers became tainted, fields withered, and animals died wherever it traveled. Legends claimed few creatures could survive its presence, making the Basilisk one of the most dreaded monsters recorded in ancient bestiaries and folklore.
