World serpent encircling the earth, destined to rise and destroy
Jörmungandr, the World Serpent of Norse mythology, is so immense that its body encircles the entire earth beneath the oceans. Cast into the sea by the gods while still young, the serpent grew endlessly until it could grasp its own tail within its jaws. Ancient prophecies foretold that when Jörmungandr finally releases its tail, Ragnarök will begin and the seas will rise to consume the world. Its battles with Thor became legendary, shaking the heavens and oceans alike as the colossal serpent stirred beneath the waves.
