Shape-shifting water horses that lure riders into drowning depths

Lore

Kelpies are shape-shifting water spirits from Scottish folklore, most often appearing as beautiful black horses near rivers and lochs. Travelers tempted to ride them soon discovered too late that the creature’s skin could not be escaped once touched. The Kelpie would drag its victims beneath the water into the dark depths below. Though usually feared as deadly predators, some tales hinted at intelligent beings capable of taking human form and walking unnoticed among mortals near the edge of the water.
