Skinless horror that spreads plague and famine with its breath
The Nuckelavee is one of the most horrifying creatures in Orcadian folklore, a skinless demon emerging from the sea carrying plague, famine, and death wherever it traveled. Often described as a grotesque fusion of horse and rider sharing a single monstrous body, the creature’s exposed muscles and black blood made even glimpsing it a source of terror. Crops withered, livestock died, and disease spread in the wake of the Nuckelavee’s arrival. Islanders feared the creature above nearly all others, believing only fresh water could repel its advance.
