Yinglong is one of the great dragons of ancient Chinese mythology, often described as a winged rain dragon whose power reaches across storms, rivers, floods, and drought. Unlike many Chinese dragons that move through cloud and water without wings, Yinglong is remembered for its celestial form, a dragon of the sky whose wings mark it as something older, rarer, and more divine.
In early legends, Yinglong is tied to the forces that shape the world itself. The dragon is said to have aided the legendary ruler Yu in controlling the Great Flood, using its tail to mark the earth where channels and waterways should be carved. In other tales, Yinglong serves the Yellow Emperor in battle, bringing floodwaters and storm power against mighty enemies. Its name is often understood as the “Responsive Dragon,” a being that answers the needs of heaven, earth, and empire.
